Saijo has various festivals in October to thank the gods for the bountiful rice harvest. Of these festivals, the most notable is the Isono shrine festival, which occurs the second weekend of every October. Information on the festival can be found at the Saijo city website (http://www.city.saijo.ehi...). If you are in town for the festivities, be prepared to offer and be offered lots of food and drinks to fellow festival-goers.
Aqua Route
Saijo is as famous for its clear mountain spring water as for its festival, maybe even more so. These water springs naturally bubble up in the town and have been built into springs called uchinuki (http://www.city.saijo.ehime.jp/english/kankou/utinuki1.htm). The Saijo Welcome Center can give you a map and short description of a route through town to many of these springs. Bring your own bottle and drink the fresh water! The route goes by the old Saijo Castle, now Saijo High School, which still has a moat. It also goes by some pleasant fountains and tree-lined avenues. The site of the castle is also a major stopping point for the famous Saijo Festival held the second weekend in October.
