Hanstholm used to be in important ferry harbour for the North Atlantic, but most services has moved to harbours better connected to the national highway system.

The only ferry route to the two North atlantic islands; Faroe Islands Torshavn and Iceland Seyðisfjörður, the ship only calls at Hanstholm in the summer season, during winter it moves to Esbjerg.

Two daily departures to Kristiansand in Norway, the trip takes about 5 hours and is only bookable online. This is a new low-cost ferry line. Service starts in April 2010.
